Karen Smith Wong, PNP

Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner

Karen Smith Wong is a certified pediatric nurse practitioner who was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio.  She attended Howard University for her undergraduate nursing degree and the University of California at San Francisco for her master’s degree as a Nurse Practitioner.

Karen has been caring for children for more than 30 years starting as floor nurse at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC.  She then moved out west to California and focused on the pediatric sub-‐specialty areas of asthma, and the genetic conditions of craniofacial abnormalities and metabolic disorders.  She also worked as a school nurse at the elementary and high school levels.

Karen returned to DC and worked in general pediatrics at Children's National Medical Center as a nurse practitioner.  She focused on young families caring for newborns and enjoyed being a part of both sick and well child care as her patients grew. She then found her area of passion, sickle cell disease (SCD).  Karen has been taking care of children with SCD as both an educator and nurse practitioner for several years.   She has attended conferences all over the world and has spoken  at conferences in London, Cleveland and here on St Thomas and St Croix  for Sickle Cell Awareness Month which is every September.

Karen is very excited to be a part of a dynamic, compassionate knowledgeable group of health care providers. Her focus will be on the care of  patients from newborn to 21 years of age.
