Frequently Asked Questions
1. Do I need an appointment? Appointments are recommended, but we gladly accept walk-ins whenever possible. Although not always guaranteed, we make every effort to see patients the same day for urgent medical needs.
2. What should I bring to my appointment? Please bring: - A valid photo ID - Your insurance card - A list of your current medications - Any relevant medical records, forms, immunization card, or referral forms, if applicable
3. What insurance plans do you accept? We accept most major insurance plans. We currently participate with the insurance companies listed below if they have contracted rates with VI Equicare our local Preferred Provider Organization: - AETNA (Local only) - Atlantic Southern - APWU - Blue Cross Blue Shield - Cigna - Elan - Humana - Mapfre - Medicare - United Healthcare If you have a stateside based policy it may not provide coverage in the Virgin Islands. In that case the standard practice fee would be payable at the time of service. We will submit a claim to your insurance company requesting payment be made directly to you. If payment is made to us we will issue a refund check. 4. Do you offer telehealth visits? Yes. Telehealth appointments are available for select medical concerns. Please call our office at 340-775-2303 to determine if a virtual visit is appropriate for your needs.
5. How do I request a prescription refill? To request a prescription refill, please log into your portal with your updated medication information and preferred pharmacy. Please allow up to 3 business days for your request to be reviewed and processed. Refill requests are reviewed by our clinical team to ensure the medication is appropriate and safe to continue. If you are out of medication, need an urgent refill, or are requesting a controlled substance, please schedule an appointment with our office.
6. How can I access my medical records? Medical records can be requested by completing our Medical Records Release Form. You may submit the completed form in person, by fax, or by email. 7. How do I schedule an appointment? Appointments can be scheduled by: - Calling any of our office locations at 340-775-2303. - Submitting an appointment request through our website - Filling out the contact form - Scheduling through your portal
8. Do you offer same-day appointments? Yes. We strive to accommodate same-day appointments for urgent medical concerns whenever availability allows.
9. Do you provide annual physicals and preventive care? Yes. We offer annual wellness exams, preventive screenings, vaccinations, and routine health maintenance for patients of all ages.
10. Can I get lab work done at your office? Samples are collected by the nursing staff or health care provider, and are either completed at the time of service or are sent to Quest Diagnostics by daily secure courier. Red Hook Family Practice PC does not have full in house lab services. Our offices are CLIA waived. Just as in the Continental U.S., some labs are done locally, and some samples are collected, prepared and sent to regional laboratories in the U.S. for analysis with results returned to us electronically. The average wait time for lab results is not delayed due to our practice location in the U.S. Virgin Islands because of the special arrangement we have with Quest Diagnostics. Same day testing (while you are in the office) - (Red Hook and Yacht Haven Clinics Only): • COVID Testing • Urine Analysis (urinary tract infection, kidney stone, diabetes) • Mononucleosis testing (mono) • Pregnancy testing (blood and urine) • Rapid strep test (strep throat) • Rapid influenza test (the flu) • Blood glucose testing (diabetes, hypoglycemia) • Occult blood testing (blood in bowel movements / vomit) Laboratory services are only available for patients in our care who don't have insurance or for our weight loss program. Services for insurance patients are referred to outside labs. We do not provide laboratory services for patients with outside lab orders or referrals. There are a number of on island medical laboratories that can provide this service for you.
11. What services do you offer? 12. What if I need a specialist? If specialty care is needed, your provider can discuss the appropriate referral and assist with the referral process when required. We will take care of transferring your records and scheduling an appointment with the specialist for you.
13. Do you offer women's health services? Yes. Our providers offer well-woman exams, Pap smears, birth control counseling, prenatal care, postpartum care, menopause management, and other women's health services.
14. Is the Patient Portal free? Yes. Our Patient Portal is free, secure, and available 24/7. 15. What should I do if I have a medical emergency? If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
16. What if I'm running late for my appointment? Please call our office as soon as possible if you are running late. We will do our best to accommodate you, but in some cases your appointment may need to be rescheduled. We have a 10 minute grace period.
17. How early should I arrive for my appointment? Please arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled appointment to complete any necessary paperwork and check in.
